How Do I Hear God?

Did You just start your walk with God and you haven’t heard Him speak? Or you’ve even started for a long while but it has been long since you last heard from Him? Do you desire to Hear God?

If you affirm to the above questions, then you’re reading the right piece.

Be Aware of God’s Speaking Abilities

If you’re not aware of His speaking ability and How He speaks, you might not know how to train yourself to listen. God can speak through dreams, visions, through a still small voice or a “knowing”.

Build a Relationship with Him

If you’d love to hear the voice of someone close to you, all you need to do is to reach out to the person. In the same manner, you must reach out to God by fellowshipping with Him. You must get in close contact with Him.

Seek To Know Him More

I remember meeting a new friend last year, but all my effort to strike up a conversation with him was futile as He was always giving monosyllabic replies. I started wondering what could be wrong until I realized He wasn’t comfortable with me yet because He doesn’t know me. That is the same way it is with God. You must get comfortable with Him. Ask Him questions, it’s by asking that you get to know Him more and you can only know Him more by doing what gets you closer to Him- studying the Word, praying, fasting and communion.

Why Do You Want to Hear Him?

Your motive and intention really do matter. If you seek to hear Him because you’d like to brag about how you hear Him and for every selfish reason. You might not hear Him.

Expect To Hear From Him

Just as a pregnant woman wait expectantly for her newborn baby, so should you wait expectantly to hear from Him.

Give yourself To The Word

See Joshua 1:8 — “8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (KJV). How do you know what He’s saying when you don’t study the word? He speaks through the scripture, so it’s expedient you give yourself to it.

Constant Renewal of Mind

See Philippians 4:8 — “8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (KJV). Different thoughts are running through your mind and since the mind speaks out of the abundance of the heart, it’s possible to mistake your thoughts for His voice.

Be humble

He speaks in a still voice, so you must learn to humble yourself if you’d like to hear from Him.

Don’t force yourself to hear something

If you’re so desperate to hear something, you might pick up the wrong thing with the assumption that He’s the One Speaking. Whereas, it’s your thought. Be still and know that He is God

Thirst for It

If you really desire to hear Him, you can choose to fast and pray for it. It would show how much you desire to hear Him and you can touch His heart that way. It’s also a way of heightening your sensitivity and silencing every noise in your body – the flesh.

Obedience

What is the use of hearing without obeying Him? You can only hear Him more when you’re obeying Him.

You must be Trustworthy

Can you be trusted to keep what He says to you? When He reveals to you the secret of others, can you be trusted not to divulge it? Can you still be trusted to stay when He tells you something you don’t like to hear?

Let The Holy Spirit Find Expression

The Holy Spirit bears inward witness, so you must allow Him. If you don’t live righteously, you hinder Him or grieve Him. This will hinder you from hearing Him.

CONCLUSION

You can’t focus on the Gift while you lose focus on the Owner of the Gift. Hearing God automatically means building a relationship with Him and you get acquainted with hearing Him by intensifying your relationship with Him, Burying yourself in His word, and Staying aligned constantly to His will. If you want to hear without obeying, it might not be possible because nobody likes to be heard without a response.
