Faith – The EVIDENCE of things not SEEN
Without faith, it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11: 6 (KJV).
Faith is a subject that I have personally struggled with in my walk with God over these few years. Hebrews 11:1 says: ‘faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen’. For clarity, let’s look at this verse in some other versions:
Heb 11:1 (NIV) Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Heb 11:1 (NEB) Faith… makes us certain of realities we do not see.
Heb 11:1 (Mof) Now faith means that we are confident of what we hope for, convinced of what we do not see.
Heb 11:1 (Wey) Now faith is a well-grounded assurance of that for which we hope, and a conviction of the reality of things which we do not see.
Heb 11: 1 (Amp) Now faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not yet revealed to the senses].
The above versions point to the fact that faith is the ability to believe as real what doesn’t exist yet. This is exactly what I struggle with- believing what is not come to pass yet. I believe many of us have this same struggle and I am writing this piece to encourage us and to show us the way to have astounding faith in a very capable God.
We should realize that when we don’t have faith in God, we are in effect displeasing Him. For those of us who struggle with faith, our outcry should be one with that of the father of the epileptic son in Mark 9:24- “and straightway, the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I belief, help thou mine unbelief ”. We need God’s grace to help us believe in the first place.
Now what are the elements of faith? How do we recognize what faith is and what faith is not?
Faith has two elements: 1) being convinced of the truth, being certain of reality, having evidence of unseen things, and 2) believing, hoping in, embracing, seizing the truth.
While faith requires being convinced that what we believe in is true, just knowing the truth is only half of faith. God’s word must be hoped for, embraced, seized!
Luke 17:5 (NIV) “The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.”
How then does one get more faith? How does one build ones faith up? Apart from crying out to God, you’ll need to build up yourself on the word of God.
Contrary to popular teaching, faith is not mental delusion, presumption or self-deception, but a work of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.
Rom 10:17 (NIV) Faith comes by hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
Rom 10:17 (Phi) Faith, you see, can only come from hearing the message, and the message is the word of Christ.
Rom 10:17 (Wey) And this proves that faith comes from a Message heard, and that the Message comes through having been spoken by Christ.
One can also get more faith by praying in the Holy Ghost. When we do this, the Holy Ghost steers our heart towards faith in the promises of God.
Jude 1:20 (KJV) But ye beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith praying in the Holy Ghost.
Faith is very important to living a victorious Christian life. I leave you with these verses and encourage you to live a life of faith today!
2 Cor 4:16-18 (Phi) This is the reason we never lose heart. The outward man does indeed suffer wear and tear, but every day the inward man receives fresh strength. These little troubles (which are really so transitory) are winning for us a permanent, glorious and solid reward out of all proportion to our pain. For we are looking all the time not at the visible things but at the invisible. The visible things are transitory: it is the invisible things that are really permanent.
I hope you enjoyed this message, all you have to do is to believe and it shall come to pass.
